Louisiana Assistance Programs.  Everyone doesn’t have a friend or family member that can pay their bills if they are laid off.  Low-income Assistance programs make a difference.  Life is unpredictable.  Anyone can lose a job, have their hours cut, or have a change in their financial situation.  There are low-income assistance programs and community and government grants that can help with bills and other mandatory needs. 

Low-Income Assistance Programs help residents of the state struggling to stay afloat.   If you or someone you know is in this situation, the good news is there are places you can go to in Louisiana to get help.  If you need financial assistance, several places offer financial grants in Louisiana for low-income families. We’ve also included a link to each resource to make it easy!

Louisiana Assistance Programs

Louisiana LaCHIP Program

LaCHIP (the Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program), provides low-income families with children up to 19 years old whose parent’s make too much money to qualify for the Medicaid program.  If you work but are uninsured because you can not afford insurance, you may be eligible for the LaCHIP Program.  1-877-252-2447.

Immediate Food Assistance

SNAP is a benefits program that allows you to buy food using an EBT card. However, it takes up to 30 days to receive these benefits. What do you do when you need food today? The National Hunger Hotline can help you locate food programs and, most importantly, local food banks where you can get groceries quickly. Also, check out local food banks in your area.  (more)

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)

If your total family income is at or below 135% of the national poverty line, you may be eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. You can determine if you are eligible by using the online eligibility screening system. Women with children, the disabled, and the elderly who meet income requirements can receive SNAP benefits.  (more)

Louisiana Dental Care

Low-cost dental clinics help provide dental care for low-income families.  If you are out of work, underemployed, or your job does not offer a dental plan, you may be able to get treated at a free dental clinic.

Dentists donate part of their time to treating disadvantaged individuals and families.  All care is not entirely free.  Some dentists may charge a small registration or service fee.  (more)

Church Assistance and Social Services

Local church assistance programs work with the government to screen and distribute funding to disadvantaged residents. They can help pay past due household debt, utilities, food, hotel vouchers, help with prescriptions, and temporary housing.

Many of these organizations can provide you with referrals to go to other agencies for further assistance. Also, these programs can help with furniture, clothing, and household items. (more)

Homeless Prevention Assistance

If you live in Louisiana and are homeless or facing eviction. This is a frightening place to be.  There are, however, charities, community groups, and government programs that can help pay past-due bills.  Also, they prevent eviction or provide help with security deposits and utilities. 

There are also city and faith-based temporary housing programs if you are homeless. These programs often have additional support services to help you regain stability.  (more)

Louisiana Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP)

One of the biggest bills a family with young children have is childcare.  If you work a low-income job, daycare can cost most of your monthly income.  The government offers childcare grants to help you continue to work or attend school. When you qualify for assistance, you can choose from

  • a licensed childcare
  • provider who cares for your child/children in their home

Louisiana  (WIC) – Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children

This program provides food, nutrition support, and nutritional education to disadvantaged pregnant women with infants and children up to the age of five.  WIC helps children who are in danger of not receiving the best nutrition.  (more)

Kinship Care Subsidy Program (KCSP)

Louisiana Kinship Care assists grandparents or other family members in raising grandchildren because the mother and father cannot care for them. The care providers must be certified or have one year to become certified.

Also, the provider must have temporary provisional custody or legal guardianship.  Caregivers receive cash assistance of $222 per month for each eligible child living with an approved caregiver.  (more)

Utility Bill Assistance in Louisiana

One reality is that many families are in danger of losing or have lost their utilities. Many incentives provide funding to help reconnect services or prevent services from being lost. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

TANF helps many suffering families throughout the United States and US Territories.  TANF provides financial assistance for bills and medical and food assistance through the SNAP program.

If you are a single mother or a family with children under 18, you may be eligible for TANF assistance.  You can apply at your local or county welfare office or go online to download an application.  (more)

Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP)

Louisiana FITAP provides cash assistance to struggling low-income families with young children.  Because this is a temporary program, you can receive this help for three years. During this time, you have many tools available to help restore financial stability.  You can receive daycare assistance, grants to return to school, medical benefits, and more. (more)
