Many low-income families struggle with paying rent, buying groceries, and other needs. We have also listed agencies that help maintain family stability by preventing evictions, paying past-due utility bills, and providing food assistance.
If you need help in any of these areas, we will show you where to go for help. The gross family income of the entire household determines eligibility. Please be prepared to present proof of identity, income, and social security cards for all seeking help.
Christmas Assistance Programs
Salvation Army
Facilitates gifts through community organizations. They give toys, help with bills, help children of prisoners, groceries, and hot meal programs. This program is made possible through donations from individuals, community organizations, and corporations. If you need help with Christmas, contact your local S.A. organization.
Catholic Charities
Help is facilitated through the Department of Social Services and community poverty organizations. Catholic Charities is an international faith-based organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged families and individuals in the community. If you need help, please contact your local Catholic Charities. You can walk in to receive free groceries from a local food bank.

Operation Christmas Child
This program is associated with Samaritan’s Purse in Boone, NC. Their famous outreach to children gives a Christmas Shoe Box to kids worldwide, and the U.S. Shoe boxes are decorated and filled with toys, clothes, and school supplies for children. If you want to support this outreach or see one in your community, contact Samaritan’s Purse.
Free Christmas Trees
This faith-based charity helps with housing, utility payments, travel vouchers, gas cards, clothing, food, and basic mandatory needs. They have programs that help ex-offenders, the disabled, beds, cribs, baby supplies, etc. They also provide Christmas, and Thanksgiving assistance, toys, food, and clothes (contact a chapter).
Make a Wish Foundation
Register if you have a sick child up to 18 with a life-threatening illness.
The United Way
This organization reaches the United States and worldwide. This resource provides assistance and referrals to community services if you are looking for help for Christmas or at any time. Operation Homefront
Operation Homefront is an outreach to military families at Christmas and every day. They join Dollar Tree to provide toys for children whose parents are in the military. Suppose you would like to receive a give for your child to register with a local Operation Homefront Tory Distribution in your state. You can also receive a home-cooked holiday turkey dinner. Loaves and Fishes
Loaves & Fishes provides free groceries to families and individuals experiencing financial challenges. If you need help with groceries, contact Catholic Charities of the Department of Social Services to get a referral to Loaves and Fishes. They also give turkey and fixings to families with children. They are located in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.

Christmas is a special time of the year, especially for children. It is challenging for parents who love their children but can not afford to buy toys for their children. Therefore, giving gifts and toys to children helps the child, but it also gives the parents the joy of knowing their child will have a good Xmas. Do I Qualify for Help with Christmas Assistance?
Everyone won’t qualify for these Christmas assistance programs like the free toy program. Eligibility is based on gross monthly or yearly family income. When you apply, you must present proof of identification with a photo, proof of address, proof of income, proof of the child’s age, and proof you are the parent or guardian of the child receiving gifts. You may qualify if you receive,
- WIC
- TANF
- SNAP
- SSI
- Medicaid
- Section 8 Housing
- School Lunch Program
If you receive help from a government agency, you must have proof of enrollment in that program.
How Do I Apply for a Free Toy
It is essential to apply for help in October. However, December is a little too late, and you may not be able to get assistance. Each program has limited funding, and thousands of families need help. Start contacting charities early to make sure your child gets a toy.
You can Apply for a Gift if you are a Legal Guardian of the Child. There is a cut-off age for receiving help, and groups are more likely to gift children under 12. There may be some acceptions, so check with the organization you sign up with when applying to bring documents supporting your financial situation. You will need to bring the following:
- Photo ID
- Proof of Income – payroll stubs, W-2 forms
- Social Security cards for each person applying for help
- Benefits documents from government agencies, unemployment benefits, and child support.
Hello, Sheila. If you do not have legal custody of your grandchild I suggest you see about doing this. With legal custody, you may be entitled to money, Medicaid, and SNAP benefits from the Department of Social Services, depending on their ages. Please check out this post here.
