Emergency Housing for Wichita & Sedgwick County

Wichita assistance programs.  If you are a Sedgwick County, Wichita resident, and need help with housing, keep reading. You will be encouraged to know that you are not alone, but many organizations in your community are ready to help you will essential mandatory housing.

Community organizations, charities, churches, and government programs lend a hand to give you the support you need during difficult times. Low-income families can receive help with bills, food, utilities, counseling, job assistance, Christmas assistance, and other support. You do have to qualify financially to receive most of these benefits.

Wichita Emergency Housing Assistance Programs

1.  City of Hope

The Center of Hope assists those in Wichita and surrounding areas about to be evicted and those needing help with utility payments. If you are looking for help, call to speak with a case manager.

Call 316-267-0222 on Mondays between 9 am and 4 pm. You can also walk in Tuesday mornings if they have an eviction notice or shut-off notice for utilities. Arrive between 6 and 7 am.

2.  Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA)

TIBRA is a benefit program funded by HUD. This program helps low-income tenants with eviction prevention and security deposits for rent, utilities, and homebuyer assistance programs. Please check your state for specific details, as policies differ from state to state.

Housing authority counselors are available to help you with the process. Community organizations distribute TBRA funding. Qualified residents receive a rent grant covering up to 70% of their rent. The balance is paid directly to the landlord by the government.

For help, bring a photo ID, eviction or turn-off notifications, Social Security cards for the household, proof of income, and proof of government assistance benefits. You will be screened, and if eligible, your landlord or utility company will be contacted to stop disconnection and eviction. When the process is completed, the bills will be paid.

3.  United Way of the Plains

United Way is a non-profit organization that acts as a one-stop resource for finding help with bills and other assistance. They can be reached by calling 2-1-1 or going to their website. They list anger management and parenting resources.

4.  Salvation Army Centers

They work with local churches, non-profits, and corporations and distribute gently used toy donations and gifts to children, and the entire family can get a free meal and help with utilities and rent. Additionally, they help during Thanksgiving and offer financial aid, heating bills, and other support. Center locations at:

Wichita Christian Assistance

Inter-Faith Ministries

This program offers all-year emergency housing in shelters and 105 apartments that help low-income persons and families.  They help young people with food, vouchers, and winter clothing.  Additionally, they provide food for pets.

Interfaith Ministries

Inter-Faith Homeless Shelters

Inter-Faith Ministries (IFM) aid families and people living in shelters.  Guidance is given to help them move from temporary to permanent housing.   Their one, two, and three-room apartments are for those working or receiving assistance.  This consists of 104 apartments.

Inter-Faith Inn

This is a full-time 24 full-service shelter.  They provide meals, clothing, toiletries, and other necessities. They can help 1,000 or more.  Their case managers help prepare residents for permanent housing.  This would include financial education, like paying bills on time, budgeting, and how to reach support systems before a crisis happens.

Wichita Homeless Prevention Programs

Inter-Faith Safe Haven

Housing is provided, and two meals per day, tuberculosis skin tests, flu shots, blood sugar, and blood pressure are administered at the location. Patient education about diabetes, hypertension, and other common ailments. Case management and smoking cessation classes.
