Louisiana Assistance Programs

Louisiana LaCHIP Program

LaCHIP (the Louisiana Childrenโ€™s Health Insurance Program), provides low-income families with children up to 19 years old whose parent’s make too much money to qualify for the Medicaid program.ย  If you work but are uninsured because you can not afford insurance, you may be eligible for the LaCHIP Program.ย  1-877-252-2447.

Immediate Food Assistance

SNAP is a benefits program that allows you to buy food using an EBT card. However, it takes up to 30 days to receive these benefits. What do you do when you need food today? SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)

If your total family income is at or below 135% of the national poverty line, you may be eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. You can determine if you are eligible by using the online eligibility screening system. Women with children, the disabled, and the elderly who meet income requirements can receive SNAP benefits.ย  (more)

Louisiana Dental Care

Low-cost dental clinics help provide dental care for low-income families.ย  If you are out of work, underemployed, or your job does not offer a dentalย plan, you may be able to get treated at aย free dental clinic.

Dentists donate part of their time to treating disadvantaged individuals and families.ย  All care is not entirely free.ย  Some dentists may charge a small registration or service fee.ย  (more)

Church Assistance and Social Services

Local church assistance programs work with the government to screen and distribute funding to disadvantaged residents. They can help pay past due household debt, utilities, food, hotel vouchers, help with prescriptions, and temporary housing.

One of the biggest bills a family with young children have is childcare.ย  If you work a low-income job, daycare can cost most of your monthly income.ย  The government offers childcare grants to help you continue to work or attend school. When you qualify for assistance, you can choose from

  • a licensed childcare
  • provider who cares for your child/children in their home

Louisianaย  (WIC) – Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children

This program provides food, nutrition support, and nutritional education to disadvantaged pregnant women with infants and children up to the age of five.ย  WIC helps children who are in danger of not receiving the best nutrition.ย  (more)

Kinship Care Subsidy Program (KCSP)

Louisiana Kinship Care assists grandparents or other family members in raising grandchildren because the mother and father cannot care for them. The care providers must be certified or have one year to become certified.

Also, the provider must have temporary provisional custody or legal guardianship.ย  Caregivers receive cash assistance of $222 per month for each eligible child living with an approved caregiver.ย  (more)
