Mississippi Single Mothers Assistance Programs
The Special Milk Program
This program provides milk to students at a cost below cost but is not a part of the Breakfast or Lunch Programs. The goal is to promote milk consumption as a healthy food substance. The Special Milk Program is available to children not eligible for other subsidized school food programs.ย ย
Parents pay a portion of the cost of milk, and the school district covers the balance. Children enrolled in kindergarten or eligible camp programs are eligible for the milk programs. Depending on income, milk is free or discounted.
To qualify, you must:
- Be a resident ofย Mississippi
- Gross family income must comply with Federal Poverty Guidelines
Head Start
Head Start is a government program geared to helping low-income families prepare their children to do well in school. Children learn problem-solving through play, literacy, and how to develop healthy relationships with other children.ย ย
This program also encourages family involvement as a key to a better learning experience. ย Early Head Start cares for infants, toddlers, and pregnant women and their families with incomes below the Federal poverty level. ย (more info)

Breakfast and Lunch Program
Many children go to school without breakfast because their family does not have food.ย The School Breakfast Program gives public schools grants to provide nutritious breakfasts for children.ย The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is another program that provides children with a healthy lunch each day.ย ย
You qualify if you are a resident of Mississippi and a parent or legal guardian of the child or children applying and meet Mississippi federal poverty guidelines. ย Children up to High School are eligible. If you would like to enroll your child/children in this program,ย
CHIPS –ย Children’s Health Insurance Program
CHIPS is a free or low-cost medical program for children of disadvantaged families meeting Federal Poverty Guidelines. CHIPS and Medicaid cover eligible children up to the age of 19. If you qualify, you must live in Mississippi, meet the age requirements, be the child’s caregiver, and be a U.S. citizen, naturalized, permanent resident, or legal alien.ย ย
Call to request an application at 1-800-421-2402, download it, and mail it to application@medicaid.ms.gov, or bring it to a Regional Medicaid office in your area. You can also fax your application to 601-576-4164.
Mississippi LIHEAP
Mississippi LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) helps disadvantaged households pay heating and utility bills. For Help with Gas, Water, or Electric Bills, go to Local Church Assistance. LIHEAP energy assistance is a low-income grant that gives families up to $350 for heating bills.
If you live in a warm state, they help with cooling costs. Home heating grants help disadvantaged residents pay for Winter heating bills. ย Callย 1-800-421-2408 to request an application or application here.

If you have experienced a disaster, such as a fire, flood, or tornado, immediate disaster assistance is available.ย You can apply for federal disaster from FEMA.
