West Virginia Assistance Programs. Government, state, local, and charity programs help needy families in West Virginia. Suppose you have been struggling financially and need help. TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) help disadvantaged households.

West Virginia Weatherization Assistance Program

This government Home Weatherization subsidy assists people with low-income homeowners with necessary home repairs.  Grants are to make home repairs, help with energy conservation, and maintain the property’s health and safety.  To qualify for help, you must be a state resident and have a gross family income at or below Federal Guidelines.

1.  WV Works

This program gives monthly cash grants to low-income and at-risk families. It provides the families with the support they need, hoping they can support their families without additional assistance. The support includes help with job searches and job training. (304) 368-4420.

2.  West Virginia Child Care Program

The Department of Social Services in South Carolina facilitates the childcare assistance program. It is now called ABC Child Care or ABC Program. The program aims to make child care in the state affordable and accessible.

These grants also assist families with family stability and self-sufficiency. Qualified families that qualify financially receive a childcare voucher. These vouchers pay approved healthcare workers and centers for child care.

3.  West Virginia Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

LIHEAP is a federally funded incentive program that is an assistance program that helps low-income families in South Carolina by paying heating and cooling bills. They also help pay past-due utility bills to prevent the disconnection of services. Qualified families receive a check for heating and cooling bills each year.

4.  TANF  West Virginia Family Assistance

TANF is a state financial assistance program that helps low-income families with children under 18 pay household bills.  First, this grant includes a cash grant to pay bills. Secondly, families receiving TANF can enroll in educational programs that improve income and job readiness.

Finally, adults who receive childcare assistance pay for a childcare professional so they can work or attend school. TANF Assistance is a two-year program.

5.  West Virginia Family Independence (FI) Program

This program’s goal is to help struggling families reach stability and self-sufficiency. The federal government gives block grants, which the state poverty organization facilitates. Grants are given to help:

  • Provide help to needy families with children
  • Promote job training and employment and
  • Maintaining the family unit through marriage.

To receive assistance from this program, you must be a US citizen, national, legal alien, or permanent resident and qualify financially.

6.  Foreclosure Counseling and Mortgage Assistance

7.  SNAP Nutrition Education Program

SNAP Nutrition Education Program helps low-income families to provide healthy meals to their families. They offer education to teach how to make healthy food choices and prepare nutritious meals, recipes, instruction, and grocery store tours. They also provide SNAP education to other government agencies.

8.  The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)

SFMNP: This program runs from May to October to help low-income seniors purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at roadside and farmer’s markets. Seniors are given $25 broken down into 5 $5 checks to shop for produce. The program serves 25,000 seniors in South Carolina.

If you live in South Carolina and receive government assistance, please ask your Department of Social Service or Agencies on Aging for checks to buy produce. The program is currently available in 37 countries, and funding is limited, so inquire in March.

9.  Supportive Services for Veterans and Families (SSVF) Programs

Volunteers of America’s SSVF programs offer services to low-income veterans and their families needing permanent housing. They help connect veterans with mandatory benefits such as counseling, financial services, transportation housing, and legal services. These services cover Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Southern Indiana, and Southern Ohio. (502) 636-0771.

10.  The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

TEFAP helps low-income families in West Virginia with emergency food. They work with local food banks and pantries such as Golden Harvest, Harvest Hope, Lowcountry, and Second Harvest Food Banks.

Individuals and families must have a gross income of at or below 150% at or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Food includes typical food found at a local food pantry. (Foodbanks)

11.  Vocational Rehabilitation Services Projects for American Indians with Disabilities

This program assists the tribal government in helping Native Indians living with disabilities and living on Federal and state reservations. This program aims to help those with disabilities with job preparation, help and strengthen their abilities with employment. 12.  Job Placement and Training

This West Virginia assistance program provides job training, employment resources, and opportunities for American Indians. To qualify, you must be a native American Indian, underemployed, unemployed, or about to lose your job. You or at least one family member must be enrolled in the  Native American Indian tribe or Alaska Native village.  Please call 202-219-5270.

13.  West Virginia Free Community Clinics

You can find information on West Virginia healthcare centers, clinics, and programs. These health programs provide patients with low-cost or free medical care. Additionally, free, discount prescription medications assist people in meeting other medical needs.

If you do not have health insurance, West Virginia has community clinics where you can be seen for free or based on your gross family income (sliding scale). You can see a physician and receive mammograms, lab tests, emergency dental care, and prescription drugs.
