Free Health Care Programs – Help with Medical Bills

Here are some programs that can help with medical bills, when you don’t know where to turn. These Federal and state programs help those who qualify financially. Those who have a gross income at 135% or below the federal poverty guidelines can get help with medical bills. These programs help you pay for or save on prescription medication and health care.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a state and federally funded health insurance program for those who help to pay medical bills. They assist low-income, disabled and elderly adults and children. Medicaid offers medical bill assistance for those you cannot afford to.

You may qualify for Medicaid if you are unemployed or your gross family income satisfies the federal poverty guideline. Medicaid pays for doctors visits, some dental procedures, and prescriptions. Income requirement varies from stat to state, please contact the Medicaid office in your state.

You may be eligible for Medicaid if:

  • Low-income families with children
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Children under age 6 from low-income families
  • Infants born eligible pregnant women
  • Children under age 6 from low-income families
  • Pregnant women whose income is below federal poverty guidelines.

Other Programs that Offer Help Paying Medical Bills

If you are unable to pay for your prescription you may qualify for free health care. The amount of help you get is determined my income and other resources. If you qualify for Medicaid, one of the Medicare Savings Programs, or SSI, you also qualify for Extra Help paying the costs of Medicare prescription drugs.

Medicare Savings Programs

State programs are low-cost medical programs that help pay Medicare premiums and Medicare Part A and B.

  • Qualified Medicare Beneficiary. If you are a QMB, you receive help with Medicare Part A and B and deductibles and co-pays when you qualify financially.
  • Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary. If your income is at or below the federal poverty guidelines, you qualify for help with Part B premiums.
  • If you are disabled, and your gross yearly income is at or below the federal poverty guidelines, you qualify for assistance with Part Premiums.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI is a monthly supplement paid by Social Security to the disabled, blind and 65 years old and older whose incomes and resources are limited. They provide a money for food, clothes, and shelter.

Community Clinics

Clinics throughout the U.S. provide free health care and low-cost health care to clients. They treat disadvantaged clients who have little or no health insurance. Each patient pays based on their gross family income. This also includes discounted costs for medicine and other necessary procedures.

Major hospitals and health clinics offer sliding scale which helps with medical bills at clinics and emergency rooms. The uninsured can apply and receive help if they qualify financially. To receive medical care from a clinic you will need to:

  • Make an appointment
  • Fill out an application
  • Present proof of identity
  • Have proof of income

Once you are approved, you will see a doctor and receive prescriptions for medication. Contact your local hospital and ask about sliding scale.

Angel Flight

Angel Flight was created by pilots who-who had a desire to volunteer their services to help the sick. The organization is run by volunteers, who arrange free air transportation for those to need medically care. Angel Flight work with individuals and organizations. They are also available for emergency travel and help those who are financially challenged.
